Label your jars: “black fly” or “tick” etc. for quick identification.
These recipes have a shelf life of about 5 to 6 months. Store in a cool, dark place. Tinted bottles keep the integrity of the essential oils longer. (blue or brown bottles)
The Basic Recipe
20 to 25 drops essential oil
2 tablespoons olive oil or vegetable oil
1 tablespoon aloe vera gel
Combine the ingredients in your container. Shake to blend. Dab a few drops onto your skin, hair or clothing.
Here are some suggestions on the essential oils that the pesky, little buggers do not like.
Ticks: I would always use this one first (they HATE this one): Rose Geranium
Other Tick Oils: Palmerosa, bay, eucalyptus, European pennyroyal, lavender, tickweed (American pennyroyal)
Mosquitoes: Pennyroyal, lemon balm (citronella), thyme, lavender
Blackflies: Sassafras, lavender, eucalyptus, pennyroyal, cedar, lemon balm (citronella), peppermint
Head Lice: Tea tree, rosemary, lavender, eucalyptus, rose geranium
Fleas: Orange oil
Side note on wasps and yellow jackets: Avoid wearing perfume, hair spray, or scented
deodorant if you know you are going to be outdoors. Avoid wearing brightly colored clothing.
Caution: Pregnant & nursing women should consult with their doctors before using.
