What Gets Your Feet Tappin’? Listen to THAT!

On November 13, 2019, I will be celebrating my 26th year as a professional DJ.

The very first event was for a friend of mine. I earned $10 an hour, blew half my money on gas and snacks at the local 7-11...and fell in love with the joy that music created during peoples’ most important life celebrations.

I was also in the early days of my decade-long radio career at the time.

There, too...I got to witness the impact that music can have on everyday life.

We’d field phone calls from people requesting songs for various reasons: to rock out in their cars while stuck in traffic, to honor a lost special friend, to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries.

My favorite ones came from a truly captive audience: at a local state prison.

We’d pick up the phone, only to hear a recording which informed us: “You have a collect call from...DUDE, PLAY SOME SKYNYRD!”

Then, with a big smile and an explanation to the listeners...we’d play some Skynyrd.

Music has been an important part of my life, all my life.

Good days, bad days, happy days, sad days...there is something for me.

Most mornings, as soon as my feet hit the kitchen floor:“Alexa, play ‘Pisces Apple Lady’ by Leon Russell!”

What follows is a full-on joyful mission of opening the blinds, putting away last night’s clean dishes and grabbing my coconut yogurt and a banana for breakfast.

When I share this story at my speaking events, I often ask people what they listen to to start their days.

Some say they listen to the news headlines, some say they just turn on the radio...others say they begin in silence.

I’ll ask if someone has a favorite song, one which really gets their soul crankin’ and feet tappin’.

When someone pipes up with theirs, the challenge is on, as I ask how it would feel to make that the first thing that greets their ears each morning...for 7 days.

The joy in the audience is always pretty amazing.

Some of them even go a capella, right there at the event.

The time a woman told us she likes “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” was particularly fun!
